Executor Bond Calculator FAQ

How much does an executor bond cost?

Executor bonds typically cost 0.5% to 2% of the estate value per year. For example, an estate worth $500,000 would require an annual bond premium of $2,500 to $10,000. Most surety companies have a minimum premium of $100. Your actual rate depends on your credit score and the size of the estate.

What is the difference between an executor bond and an administrator bond?

An executor bond is required when the deceased left a will naming an executor to manage the estate. An administrator bond is required when there is no will (intestate) and the court appoints an administrator. Both bonds serve the same purpose: protecting estate beneficiaries from mismanagement of assets. The cost and underwriting process are identical.

Can an executor bond requirement be waived?

Yes, in many states the will can include language waiving the executor bond requirement. However, the court may still require a bond if beneficiaries request it, if the executor lives out of state, or if there are minor or incapacitated beneficiaries. Administrator bonds are generally required by the court and cannot be waived since there is no will.
