Georgia Title Bond Calculator

Enter your vehicle's DOR-assessed retail value and model year below. This tool runs the exact formula Georgia DOR applies to Form MV-46 — 2× value, $5,000 floor — and estimates the premium and TAVT that follow.

Georgia Title Bond Cost Calculator

2x average retail value · $5,000 minimum · 4-year term

Enter your vehicle's estimated retail value and model year. We use the same 2x multiplier the Georgia Department of Revenue applies on Form MV-46, then estimate your premium and the 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) you'll pay separately at your County Tag Office.

$

Use the value DOR establishes for your make/model/year (NADA-style retail, not what you paid).

Georgia DOR will not issue a bonded title for vehicles 1985 or older.

Have your number? Our licensed agency places the bond with a Treasury-certified surety — ready for your County Tag Office filing.

How Georgia Sets Your Bond Amount

Most states set a bonded-title multiplier of 1.5× the vehicle's value. Georgia is on the stricter end at , tied with Florida as the highest multiplier among states that publish a fixed formula. Under O.C.G.A. § 40-3-28, the calculator above solves this exact equation:

Bond Amount = max( 2 × Average Retail Value , $5,000 )

“Average retail value” isn't a number you estimate — it's the figure DOR already has on file for your make, model, year, and trim in its Motor Vehicle Assessment Manual, the same source used to calculate your Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). Georgia DOR and your surety both pull from that lookup, so entering a different number into this calculator than what DOR shows will produce a bond amount that gets kicked back at filing.

The bond stays in force for a fixed 4 years from issuance — there's no annual renewal and no partial-year proration. That's why the premium shown by this calculator is a one-time charge, not a recurring cost, and why the bond amount itself (not the premium) is what determines your $5,000 floor eligibility.

Official Georgia Requirements

"The valuation amount on the bond shall be twice the average retail value of the vehicle as reflected in the current issue of any nationally recognized used car guide... The bond shall be for not less than $5,000.00 and shall expire at the end of four years unless the commissioner has been notified of a breach of a condition of the bond."

Worked Examples Across Vehicle Values

Same formula, six different starting values — including where the $5,000 floor kicks in below roughly $2,500 of DOR-assessed value.

DOR Retail ValueBond AmountEst. Premium (4-yr)
$1,500$5,000(floor)$100$150
$4,000$8,000$100$240
$8,500$17,000$170$510
$14,500$29,000$290$870
$25,000$50,000$500$1,500
$40,000$80,000$800$2,400

Premium estimates assume a typical 1%–3% rate of bond face and average credit; final premium is set by the underwriting surety. TAVT (7% of retail value, paid separately at the County Tag Office) is not included in these figures.

Calculator & Bond Amount FAQ

Questions specific to how the Georgia formula works

How exactly is the Georgia title bond amount calculated?

Take the average retail value the Georgia Department of Revenue assigns your vehicle (the same figure DOR uses for TAVT), multiply it by 2, and that’s your bond face amount — with a $5,000 floor if 2x the value comes in lower. That formula comes directly from O.C.G.A. § 40-3-28 and is what the surety prints on Form MV-46. This calculator runs that exact math: enter your value and year, and it returns the bond amount DOR will require, not a rough estimate.

My result shows $5,000 even though my car is only worth $1,800 — why?

Because O.C.G.A. § 40-3-28 sets $5,000 as the statutory floor for every Georgia title bond, regardless of vehicle value. 2 × $1,800 = $3,600, which is below the floor, so the calculator (and DOR) uses $5,000 instead. Low-value vehicles still cost less to bond in practice — premium is a percentage of the bond amount, so the $5,000 floor keeps the premium modest even though the bond face looks high relative to the car.

Does this calculator include the 7% TAVT I’ll owe at the tag office?

Yes, it shows a separate TAVT line so you can see the two costs side by side, but they are not the same charge. The bond premium (the number highlighted in the results) is what you pay the surety for the MV-46 bond. Georgia’s 7% Title Ad Valorem Tax is a state titling tax paid to your County Tag Office on the day you file — it applies whether you’re bonding the title or not, and it isn’t part of the surety bond transaction at all.

Is the bond amount the same thing as what I’ll pay?

No — this trips up almost everyone the first time. The bond amount (2x your vehicle’s value, e.g. $20,000 on a $10,000 car) is the maximum a claimant could recover against the bond, not a fee you pay. What you actually pay is the premium: roughly 1%–3% of that bond amount, charged once for the full 4-year term. On a $20,000 bond that’s typically $200–$600, not $20,000.

Where do I find the "average retail value" this calculator asks for?

Use the value Georgia DOR has on file for your exact make, model, year, and trim at eservices.drives.ga.gov — the same lookup your surety and your county tag agent will both check before they accept your value. Don’t use what you paid for the car or a private online estimate; if your entered value and DOR’s value diverge significantly, the bond will need to be reissued at the correct amount.

What if my vehicle is a 1985 model or older?

Georgia DOR does not issue MV-46 bonded titles for vehicles from 1985 or earlier — this calculator will flag that automatically if you enter an older year. For pre-1986 vehicles, the usual path is a court order establishing ownership through superior court, or in some cases registering without a Georgia title. Your County Tag Office can tell you which applies to your specific vehicle.
